Throughout the past centuries, since slavery was officially abolished in many countries, a lot of progress has been achieved in the field of Human, Women’s and Children’s Rights.

Unfortunately, today, slavery still exists in its many forms, all over the world.

Human trafficking is said to generate about 32 billion dollars every year.

The number of people who are being exploited is thought to reach 2.5 million people around the world, every single year.

However the exact number of victims (many of whom remain anonymous) is hard to evaluate and, most certainly, under-estimated.

Who are the victims of human trafficking?

The most vulnerable, mostly – thousands of women and girls (about 80% of victims) and children (between 15 and 20% of victims) from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as the victims of discrimination and social exclusion – are impacted by these contemporary plagues : human trafficking, forced prostitution, forced labour, the forced recruitment of children as child soldiers in war zones, the forced recruitment of children into the drug trade, forced begging, forced marriage, organs trafficking, etc.

So what can we do to fight these types of contemporary slavery?

The simple fact of educating yourself is key.
The more you try to understand the situation, the more aware of these problems and their causes you become, the more we will talk about this, the better we can act together to make a difference!

You can commit to supporting the victims of contemporary slavery by becoming a volunteer, for instance (in your own country or by joining an international humanitarian project).

You can get organised to condemn these crimes and request that the people who are found guilty of human traffficking get the punishment they deserve, by signing online petitions.

Because their future depends on our commitment, let’s fight together to put an end to these practices which don’t belong in the XXIst century!
