The washing machine, a revolutionary invention since it was created in 1797, which most of us can’t live without…
Millions of people around the world, however, do live without one, especially in developping countries !

While taking part in a volunteering mission abroad, you might not have access to this luxury either, temporarily.
Hand washing your clothes will then be your best option if you don’t wish to pack heavy suitcases !

Hand washing : how does it work ?

Here is an answer to volunteers who have raised this question (which is a legitimate question for anyone who has been lucky enough to have a washing machine at home) :

  • Please remember not to mix your whites and your colours!
  • Choose a hand washing detergent which is adapted to the fabric of your textiles, in order not to damage them.
  • Use Marseille soap or a stain remover on stains before hand washing your clothes.
  • Start by pouring the hand washing detergent then fill the basin with water.
  • Follow instructions re the maximum recommended temperature (which you will find on your clothes labels).
  •  Don’t leave your clothes to soak for too long.
  • Rince well to avoid any white stains on your clothes.
  • Wring water out of your clothes delicately so as not to crease them too much.

There you go ! You’re now ready for adventure now that you know how to wash your clothes the nomadic way!
